7 Feb. 2025: Svante Technologies Inc. is set to develop a groundbreaking carbon capture and storage project at the Ashdown Pulp Mill in Arkansas, marking a significant advancement in environmental technology for the pulp and paper industry.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office has selected Svante's project for a potential cost-sharing agreement of up to $1,499,889.
This initiative aims to demonstrate the feasibility of generating high-quality carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits while enhancing the industry's sustainability. The project will utilize Svante's innovative rotary solid sorbent system, which employs advanced Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-based filter technology.
Key advantages of Svante's technology include:
Reduced CO2 capture costs through the use of low-grade waste heat
A modular design that minimizes impact on existing operations
Environmentally responsible materials that avoid harmful emissions and waste
If the project reaches its final investment decision, it could remove up to 1.5 million tonnes of biogenic CO2 annually. This approach targets CO2 originating from sustainable biomass rather than anthropogenic sources.
Claude Letourneau, President & CEO of Svante, emphasized the unique opportunity this presents: "The pulp and paper industry represents a unique opportunity for technology and nature to work in tandem to remove CO2 from the atmosphere".
The project not only aims to reduce carbon emissions but also to create new revenue streams through CDR credits in the voluntary market. This could provide a compelling business case for wider adoption within the pulp and paper industry.
Svante's partnership with Paper Excellence and Wood for this Pre-FEED study at the Ashdown pulp mill marks a critical step towards deploying next-generation carbon capture technology in this sector. As the project progresses, it has the potential to revolutionize emissions management in industrial facilities and pave the way for broader industry adoption.
