17 Sept. 2024: From its humble beginnings in 1924 to becoming the largest mill for recycled papers in the UK and the second largest in Europe, Kemsley's journey reflects the evolution of sustainable paper production.
Founded by Frank Lloyd with the initial mission of producing newsprint, Kemsley Mill quickly established itself as an industry leader. By the mid-20th century, under Bowater's ownership, the mill had significantly expanded its output, setting the stage for decades of industrial prowess.
The 1970s saw Kemsley diversify into corrugated case materials and fine papers, while the 1980s brought a management buy-out and the beginning of DS Smith's association with the mill. This partnership culminated in DS Smith's full acquisition in 2008, ushering in an era of significant investments and technological advancements.
In recent years, Kemsley has made remarkable strides in sustainability. The mill's award-winning Reject Processing Centre, launched in 2015, diverts over 12,000 tonnes of ragger rope from landfill annually. An Anaerobic Digester introduced in 2018 harnesses renewable energy, while an Energy from Waste plant became operational in 2020, further enhancing the mill's sustainable operations.
The mill's commitment to innovation extends to its digital transformation. In 2021, Kemsley adopted advanced data mining tools and implemented Automated Guided Vehicles, revolutionizing warehouse operations and optimizing efficiency.
Today, Kemsley Paper Mill boasts an annual production capacity of approximately 830,000 tonnes, offering a wide range of 100% recyclable and sustainably sourced paper products. The mill's latest £48 million investment in a new fibre preparation line, announced in 2024, aims to further improve efficiency, sustainability, and reliability.
Niels Flierman, Head of Paper and Recycling at DS Smith, emphasized the importance of this investment: "Kemsley paper mill is an important part of our business and of the UK's recycling capacity, recycling up to one million tonnes of paper and card every year. The installation of the new fibre preparation line will ensure that we can continue to make high-performing papers more efficiently while delivering on our medium and long-term sustainability goals".
As Kemsley Paper Mill enters its second century, it continues to lead the way in sustainable paper production. With its ongoing investments in technology and commitment to environmental stewardship, Kemsley is well-positioned to maintain its legacy as a pioneer in the paper industry for years to come.
