29 Nov. 2022: Most paper and board market segments in the UK were characterised by weak demand and price pressure in November. However, ordinary recovered paper grades showed an unexpected rise in prices amid strong export demand.
Contrary to all expectations, prices for a number of ordinary grades rose in November on the UK recovered paper market, which insiders attributed to high PRN prices and strong export demand.
By contrast, on the market for corrugated case material the downward price trend has now reached the British market. In the middle of the month, there were often price reductions for unbleached corrugated case material.
On the cartonboard market, producers of GD grades reduced energy surcharges and sometimes also base prices in November.
The market for printing and writing paper is currently trying to find a new, longer-lasting price level. Demand, especially for woodfree paper, is described as rather weak at the moment, and things are quieter in the publication paper markets as well. Paper availability has improved, there are spot lots of fine paper and some peak prices have disappeared. Negotiations to determine publication paper prices as of January are proving challenging.
